Dirk Reith is professor of composition at the Folkwang University of the Arts and artistic director of ICEM (Institute for Computer Music and Electronic Media), as well as founder of the international festival for computer music and media art, EX MACHINA in Essen. He is a founding member of GNMR (Gesellschaft für neue Musik Ruhr e.V./ Society for New Music Ruhr e.V.) and was a member of the board for more than 10 years and board chairman from 1996 to 2000. Between 1997 and 1999 he headed the "Working Group Multimedia and Art NRW" of the MSWWF (Ministry of Schools, Further Education, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia).

As a guest lecturer he teaches internationally at universities and institutes in France, Italy, USA, Australia, Japan and Korea. In recent years, he has predominantly been engaged as a composer with the connection between mechanical instruments and electronics, multimedia stage projects and in the field of algorithmic composition. Some of his works have also been performed internationally.
