›10000 Gestures ‹ is based on the idea of developing a work in which no single movement ever repeats itself. No sooner carried out, each and every one vanishes irretrievably. 24 dancers direct the viewer’s gaze and thoughts unremittingly from the individual to the group, from details to the overall picture and back again. In a veritable shower of movements, the French choreographer and dancer Boris Charmatz celebrates a unique and unrepeatable experience - the transience of dance.

›10000 Gestures‹ might well be the result of digital data or parameters but is instead an absolutely subjective act of choreographic handwork realised with and through the dancers’ bodies. Charmatz, whose work repeatedly explores the realms of fine art and philosophy, teamed up once again for this production with fashion designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard. Attired in Lespagnard’s heterogeneous costumes and accessories and accompanied by monumental strains of Mozart’s ›Requiem‹, Charmatz’s blistering explosion of movements culminates in a state of near hypnosis that is at once meditative, almost melancholic - a gift dedicated to symbolic disappearance.
