Absolute Helligkeit

Following ›Die Scheinwerferin‹, presented at PACT Zollverein in 2011, Naoko Tanaka assumes a less prominent role in the second part of her Shadow Trilogy. The main protagonist in ›Absolute Helligkeit‹ is a single source of light which appears like an autonomous eye. In astronomy, the concept of ›absolute magnitude‹ (German ›Absolute Helligkeit‹, literally ‘absolute brightness’) is a measure of a celestial object's intrinsic brightness. The brightness is calculated at a distance of 32.6 light years and allows us to comprehend that which goes beyond the limits of our physical perception. The installation performance ›Absolute Helligkeit‹ delves into the connotations evoked by this mathematical measure in order to relate the subjective and the objective, the sensory and the tangible and, not least, amaze and challenge the viewers’ perceptions.
