Marlene Monteiro Freitas’s electrifying production ›Jaguar‹ is inspired by the artist group Blauer Reiter, the Carnival tradition of her native island, Cape Verde, the stories of E. T. A. Hoffmann and the works of artists Adolf Wölfli and Gustav Klimt. Two characters with huge clown mouths and an irrepressible lust for the absurd, for distortion, detachment of meaning and silent film comedy, take to the stage in a breathless hunt. To music by Claudio Monteverdi, Arnold Schönberg, Igor Strawinsky and David Bowie, the pair continually find themselves in new and unforeseen situations. Neurotic and obsessive, with penetrating grimaces, burlesque contortions and acrobatic ambition, they eventually unite in a new variation on Gustav Klimt’s kiss.
With ›Jaguar‹ Marlene Monteiro Freitas, winner of the Silver Lion at the 2018 Venice Biennale, has created a unique aesthetic language that is as disturbing and sombre as it is shrill and humorous. (La Biennale di Venezia awarded the Silver Lion to dancer and choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas)
