Birds out of Time

Free admission

The programme will take place outside on the Zollverein colliery slagheap. This is within walking distance of PACT. A map will be available here shortly and on site at the weekend. The slagheap is not barrier-free accessible.

With ›Birds out of Time‹, Dennis Deter and Anja Müller invite us to encounter familiar voices in a novel way: birdsong is transposed into the time-based rhythm of human language. Slowed down by ten, the otherwise light-hearted trilling sounds of the birds often acquires an eerie and at times yearning effect, one not least full of humour. In a tangibly sensorial fashion, ›Birds out of Time‹ shows how varied and complex the communication of birds is: it is so much more than the birdsong to which we pay little attention in everyday life. Yet a unique language unfolds outside our windows and amidst the treetops. ›Birds out of Time‹ turns our woodland walks into a magnificent acoustic experience. Resounding between the branches is the multifaceted dichotomy of the fast and the slow, of yesterday and today, of the human and the non-human, of calling and listening and of the present and the absent.

For it is by listening – and not by speaking – that we can truly realise: we are not alone.
