FOI

  • Sat 08.05.04 20 h

Foi deals with one of the central questions of our times: tolerance between different religions and cultures. Using his own idiosyncratic dance language, choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui examines myth, legend, and the role of belief in the stories that are passed on from one generation to the next. What survives from the teachings of the past? What traditions are important?

Foi was voted ballet production of the year 2003 in the critics' survey in the ballettanz journal.

»Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui brings medieval music and the best contemporary dancers together in a way that the result shimmers like a swarm of butterflies - full of irony and dancing force, full of jokes and enviable power... a masterly fusion of Islamic and western culture.« Arnd Wesemann, ballettanz

»The cast is extraordinary, reckless and compelling, and Cherkaoui is clearly a major talent... Foi's visions cut disturbingly close to the bones of our current situation.« The Guardian, 5.4.2003
